Francis Scott Key: The Star Spangled Banner
During the War of 1812, Fort McHenry, outside Baltimore Maryland was attacked. Francis Scott Key was there to witness it. The American flag could distinctly be seen though the night by the glare of the battle. By dawn, the firing ceased and the stars and stripes were still flying on the ramparts. This inspired Key to write a poem; the words that would become America's national anthem.
Samuel Francis Smith: My Country, 'Tis Of Thee (America)
Inspired by patriotic writings from Germany, Samuel Francis Smith felt the United States needed a national poem. In thirty minutes he had written "America." The poem was put to music first popularized in England as their national anthem, "God Save the Queen (King)." The melody was borrowed but the words are uniquely American.
